Le Piton des Neiges

27 Dec ’11

Beginning of this year I hiked the Piton des Neiges to prepare myself before going to Nepal. It was the first real hike in a lonnnnng time and I really wasn’t fit … The Piton des Neiges is located in Reunion Island and is the highest top (3,069 m) of the Indian Ocean. There is several path to get to the top, we took the shortest but steepest one and had a stop overnight at the Gite (halfway through). I got some cool landscape shots throughout the climb. (Click on the images to see then in better resolution/size).

The first part of the climb is through a densely forested cliff wall, which ironically is called “le mur” or the wall.

The sunset after the first part was wonderful, the sky was full of colors. After dinner I went out to take a Panorama, but I didn’t last long because it was pretty cold outside.

This shot was taken at night under a bright moon. We started hiking for the summit at night so that we would be at the top for the sunrise. For this shot I had no tripod so i just used some rocks and composed the frame using the live view and my head torch.

As weird as it may seem the sun was actually behind me for this shot.

This are the prayer flag at the summit and here comes the view. On a clear day it is possible to have a 360 degree view of the island, it’s pretty cool and rewarding.

And this is where we started from the day before.

And on the way back down, between two fog clouds appears the “angel hairs”, a type of lichen.

After that hike I took painkillers for two days and slept for 3 days, but it was totally worth it.
